Selective appropriation of criticism in white-supremacist Telegram publishing
Abstract
Organizations can reject a critic’s judgment while appropriating the critic’s observations as favorable evidence. Drawing on reluctant testimony, evaluative redescription, and image-repair research, we examine a year of Patriot Front’s Telegram publishing with StylometriX 2.0. A reproducible extraction from 220 supplied files reconstructs 4,158 distinct posts in two channels between December 2023 and November 2024. A source-name search of 210 nonempty posts in the commentary channel returns twelve records. Passage-level analysis identifies six instances of selective appropriation: adverse counts become performance indicators, unfavorable descriptions receive favorable names, and disputed experts are credited for particular observations. Four counterattacks, one quotation-led presentation, and one conversion testimonial establish the category’s boundaries. Forward metadata resolves 89 interchannel links, 81 from the smaller commentary channel to the larger publishing channel. Sixty of the 64 linked pairs containing text preserve the available wording exactly. In two annotated cases, the reinterpretation itself is carried into a matched republication. The findings identify a form of selective authority in which hostility toward a source coexists with acceptance of a useful proposition. StylometriX makes this operation inspectable through linked passages, identifiers, timestamps, and executable reconstruction
